Puppy left to starve in apartment finds forever home with rescuer
A puppy who was found in a New Castle, Pennsylvania, apartment and left to starve now has a new home with one of the police officers who rescued her.According to the Humane Society of Lawrence County, Miranda was 4 pounds and had ribs showing through her fur when she was found in an apartment in January "The puppy appeared to be starving and couldn’t walk and couldn't keep its head up at that time. The puppy tried to get over to the officer by shuffling its legs on its belly trying to get over to us,” said New Castle police chief Robert Salem.Miranda now weighs 14 pounds.The Humane Society's Facebook post said Officer Mark Lewis could not get Miranda out of his head and decided to adopt her."We know many people have offered to open their hearts and homes to her. And we appreciate all of the interest she has received. But after due consideration, we believe Officer Lewis is the best choice."Charges have been filed against the owner, Karrington Dukes, 19.Police said Dukes posted on Facebook on Jan. 10, asking, "who wanted a puppy." When police found a picture of the dog Dukes was attempting to get rid of, it appeared to be the same dog discovered in her vacant apartment.
