Early morning food store fire 'deliberately set', damages estimated at $7,500

A Monday morning fire in the city’s northeast was deliberately set , fire officials said.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services arrived at Fatima’s Discount Food Store in the area of 118 Avenue and 66 Street at 5:13 a.m. after receiving multiple calls from the public. The fire was under control at 5:20 a.m. and fully extinguished by 6:30 a.m.

“This deliberately set fire originated among some pallets, cardboard and trash that was being stored next to an exterior wall of the business,” said Edmonton fire spokesperson, Brittany Lewchuk said.

The outside of the store’s northern wall, a storage trailer and a van were all damaged. Total damages are estimated at $7,500.

A police investigation is currently underway.

Alberta Environment and Drainage were contacted due to run-off contamination.
