Record high gas prices not influencing Memorial Day travel

.

In what is expected to be a return to pre-pandemic travel volume, people are saying they want to travel this Memorial Day weekend despite record-high gas prices.

Heading into the holiday weekend, gas prices are $1.50 higher than they were last year with a national average of $4.59 per gallon Wednesday, according to AAA.

“Gasoline has either remained flat or risen every day since April 24 and has set a new record daily since May 10,” AAA spokesman Andrew Gross said.

The record gas prices are not likely to deter travelers, however.

Nearly 60% say they plan to vacation over the holiday weekend — an increase of 118% from 2021, according to a survey conducted by the Vacationer.

AAA expects this weekend’s travel to be the busiest it has been in two years, nearly returning travel volume to pre-pandemic levels.
