Muscat: Fish production in Sultanate of Oman fell by 22.6 per cent to 346,391 tonnes at the end of May 2022 compared to 447,391 tonnes during the same period in 2021.

The total value of fish production increased by 1.9 per cent to reach OMR168.8 million at the end of May 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, according to the statistics issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The artisanal fishing sector, which acquires the bulk of fish production in the Sultanate saw a decrease of 24.3 per cent at 324,004 tonnes at the end of May 2022 compared to 428,041 tonnes during the same period in 2021.

The Governorate of Al Wusta topped the Sultanate’s list of landed fish at 126,937 tonnes registering a fall of 32 per cent in May 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, followed by South Al Sharqiyah Governorate at 101,303 tonnes and Dhofar Governorate at 32,646 tonnes, respectively.

Muscat Governorate’s artisanal fishing increased by 21 per cent at the end of May 2022 to reach 13,403 tonnes compared to 11,081 tonnes during the same period in 2021.

The coastal and commercial fishing sectors registered an increase by 16.7 per cent and 8.5 per cent, respectively, according to the statistics of the National Centre for Statistics and Information.
