UFC: Adesanya goes for broke against Imanov in Saudi Arabia
Nigerian-born New Zealand punch-for-punch AFC star Israel Adesanya will aim to bounce back from rock bottom and return to winning ways when he takes on rising contender Nassourdine Imavov at The Venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday night.
The erstwhile king of the middleweight division hopes to redeem his battered image coming off back-to-back losses, most recently against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 305.
Despite his recent poor form, bookmakers favour Adesanya, given his wealth of experience in five-round fights.
While Imavov is a versatile and well-rounded threat with solid boxing prowess, Adesanya’s elite precision, footwork, and range control give him a clear edge in the striking exchanges.
However, it remains to be seen if Adesanya can reclaim his lost glory and dominance or if Imanov is ready to announce his arrival in the UFC elites.
One simple trait that has continued to work for the former champion is his patience in dismantling aggressive fighters, his defensive awareness and ability to control distance will neutralise Imavov who lacks the high-level chain wrestling needed to ground Adesanya consistently.
Durability is Adesanya’s biggest strength, and with proven five-round endurance, he has what it takes to maintain a measured pace. On the other hand, Imavov has shown signs of fading under sustained pressure. Onlookers expect Adesanya to land precise, damaging strikes to keep Imavov at bay.
Head to head
Adesanya remains one of the most dynamic and technical strikers in MMA history. His counterstriking, range control, and fight IQ make him an elite competitor. As for Imavov, he has been on a roll, securing impressive wins over Brendan Allen, Jared Cannonier, and Roman Dolidze. The Frenchman has the tools to make life difficult for Adesanya tonight.
But Adesanya is one of the most refined kickboxers in MMA, his technical precision is unmatched. Counterstriking: His ability to evade and land counter shots has led to many highlight-reel knockouts. Octagon Control: Uses footwork and movement to dictate the pace and frustrate opponents.
With strength and ability, Imavov has been described as a complete mixed martial artist who can threaten with striking and grappling. Has shown the ability to take damage and push forward. Not a wrestler though, Imavov has solid submission skills and could test Adesanya’s ground defense.
What to expect
Adesanya will look to maintain his striking dominance and keep Imavov at range, while Imavov will likely try to pressure and mix in clinch work or takedowns. The key question is whether Imavov can force Adesanya into uncomfortable positions or if Adesanya’s precision will be too much for the rising contender. Bookmakers still favour Adesanya to nick this one and announce his return with a win.
