WHEN I heard that a family-run bakery was opening the largest sandwich shop in the UK, I knew I needed to see it for myself.

Sandwich Sandwich was founded in 2012 by Nick Kleiner, a Bristol-based baker.

With the help of his son Josh the chain has expanded to three shops and has bagged a series of prestigious awards, including Uber Eats Restaurant of the Year 2023.

Its latest shop, in Mark Lane, London, will be the largest sandwich store in the UK.

The shop opened on March 17 and will serve customers seven days a week.

It can hold 200 people and has a deli, hot food counter, drinks station and coffee bar.

Stepping into the store, I was amazed by just how big it is.

At 3,500 square feet, it is massive.

As you walk through the door there are eight touch screens that can be used to take orders.

To the left is a drinks to go station stocked to the brim with cans of Coca Cola and Fanta.

On your right is the hot food counter, where the popular breakfast sandwiches and hot sandwich stacks are served.

Meanwhile, at the back of the shop is the deli counter which made the brand famous.

It’s full to the brim with huge mounds of coleslaw, egg mayonnaise, jalapenos and salad.

My mouth watered just looking at it.

The brand has built a devoted following with its huge sandwich selection and unusual flavour combinations.

In the time I'm in the store several people stopped and pressed their faces against the window.

Another passerby asked me when the store was set to open.

I'm not surprised the chain is popular with sandwich lovers.

What’s on the menu?

The chain is also launching a plant-based Chicken Jalfrezi sandwich based on the popular curry house dish with comedian Romesh Ranganathan.

But it’s the Soft Boiled Scotch Eggs that have stolen the show.

The award-winning treats are made with Cumberland sausage and a secret crumb, which includes 12 different herbs and spices.

Josh Kleiner told me the chain wants to make a big impact with its new store.

He said: "Our first London store has been doing phenomenally but due to space limitations queues form regularly.

"We wanted a site which could accommodate everybody and really keep up with demand.

"We wanted the biggest sandwich shop in the UK to make a statement and prove that we are here to change the game."

I'm sceptical whether the store will pull customers at the weekend, when the City is at its quietest.

But Josh is confident the shop will still be busy.

He said: "We're going to be open seven days a week because we truly believe that people will travel to visit this store.

"We're confident in our ability to pull people through. We want to get people back into the City again."

Sandwich Sandwich has set its sights on a further five stores by the end of the year.

It hopes to have a shop in every square mile of London, with the West End and Tottenham Court Road among the locations it is eyeing up.

But Josh does not want to stop there.

He added: "Sandwich Sandwich is going to be in every city of this country. It's going to be coming to other places in the UK, without a shadow of a doubt."

I'm sure sandwich fans will be delighted.

The Mark Lane shop is open on Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm.
