AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD... NOW EXPECTED TO BE CLOSED FOR ONE OF THE BUSIEST AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD. EXPECTED TO BE CLOSED FOR SEVERAL DAYS. THE LATEST UPDATES ON THE FIRE OUTSIDE OF LONDON’S HEATHROW AIRPORT. PLUS NEW FOOD AT GREAT AMERICAN BALLPARK THIS SEASON. OUR FIRST LOOK AT THE NEW MENU OPTIONS. AND WE HAVE THE SUNSHINE RETURNING FOR TODAY. THOSE TEMPERATURES A LITTLE CHILLY, BUT MORE SEASONAL AIR RETURNING BEFORE RAIN RETURNS AS WELL. I’LL TELL YOU WHEN IT MOVES OUR WAY. COMING UP, THIS IS WLWT NEWS FIVE LEADING THE WAY WITH BREAKING NEWS. ALL RIGHT, SO THAT BREAKING NEWS. EUROPE’S BUSIEST AIRPORT EXPECTED TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR DAYS. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US AT NOON. I’M MEGHAN MITCHELL, AND I’M KELLY RIPPIN. OBVIOUSLY, WE KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GETTING READY TO GO ON SPRING BREAK TRIPS. SPRING BREAK IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, AND FLIGHTS TO AND FROM LONDON’S HEATHROW AIRPORT WERE CANCELED TODAY AFTER A FIRE NEAR NEARBY SUBSTATION KNOCKED OUT POWER AND HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DEPEND ON THAT AIRPORT EVERY DAY. SO EVEN IF YOUR FLIGHT IS NOT THROUGH THERE, YOU COULD BE IMPACTED EARLIER IN THE MORNING, AIRPORT OFFICIALS SAID IT COULD REOPEN TOMORROW. BUT JUST A SHORT TIME AGO, THOSE SAME OFFICIALS GIVING AN UPDATE SAYING THEY DON’T KNOW WHEN THE POWER WILL BE RESTORED, ONLY SAYING THAT IT COULD LAST SEVERAL DAYS. NBC’S RAF SANCHEZ REPORTS FROM LONDON. LONDON’S HEATHROW, NORMALLY ONE OF THE BUSIEST AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD. BUT THIS MORNING THIS IS AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN GET. AND WE ARE ALREADY SEEING TRAVEL DISRUPTION WORLDWIDE WITH U.S. PASSENGERS FROM COAST TO COAST FACING FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS. NOW, LOCAL AUTHORITIES ARE SAYING A FIRE BROKE OUT AT A POWER STATION NEAR THE AIRPORT EARLY THIS MORNING. THE CAUSE, STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION, BUT IT KNOCKED OUT POWER TO THE AIRPORT’S FOUR TERMINALS. AUTHORITIES HERE ARE SAYING HEATHROW IS GOING TO BE SHUT UNTIL AT LEAST MIDNIGHT LOCAL TIME. THAT’S 8 P.M. EASTERN. SOME 1300 FLIGHTS WERE SCHEDULED TO TAKE OFF OR LAND HERE TODAY. THOSE ARE OBVIOUSLY GOING TO BE DIRECTLY IMPACTED, BUT WE ARE GOING TO SEE A LOT OF KNOCK ON EFFECTS WITH THOSE AIRCRAFT OUT OF POSITION FOR THEIR NEXT FLIGHTS. THE ADVICE FROM TRAVEL EXPERTS IS TO CHECK DIRECTLY WITH YOUR AIRLINE. IF YOU THINK THAT YOUR TRAVEL PLANS MAY BE IMPACTED. THE LAST TIME HEATHROW WAS CLOSED LIKE THIS WAS 2010, AS A RESULT OF A VOLCANO THAT ERUPTED IN ICELAND SENDING ASH UP INTO THE AIR. THAT PARALYZED GLOBAL AIR TRAFFIC FOR A WEEK. AND PEOPLE HERE ARE HOPING IT WILL BE MUCH QUICKER THIS TIME. RALPH SANCHEZ, NBC NEWS, LONDON. YEAH, PRETTY CRAZY SITUATION. SO WE WILL OF COURSE, CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED THERE. WE ALSO NOW KNOW THE NAME OF THE MAN WHO WAS KILLED IN A SHOOTING AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN WALNUT HILLS EARLY THIS MORNING. THE HAMILTON COUNTY CORONER SAYS 34 YEAR OLD THOMAS ALEXANDER WAS THE VICTIM. HE WAS SHOT IN A STAIRWELL AT THE PARK EDEN APARTMENTS ALONG PARK AVENUE AROUND 3 A.M. POLICE HAVE NOT ANNOUNCED ANY ARRESTS. AND OF COURSE, IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING, PLEASE CALL CRIME STOPPERS. 352 3040. NOW TO AN UPDATE ON THE STORM DAMAGE FROM OVERNIGHT THAT WE BROUGHT YOU AS BREAKING NEWS YESTERDAY MORNING. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONFIRMING AN EF ONE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN AT CVG AIRPORT WITH WINDS OF MORE THAN 100MPH, MOVING A BOEING 747 THAT WAS SITTING THERE ON THE TARMAC. DEBRIS WAS ALSO RIPPED OFF OF A BUILDING THAT WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION ON AIRPORT PROPERTY. GOOD NEWS HERE IS NO ONE WAS HURT. BUT THAT SAME STORM SYSTEM ALSO DESTROYED A TWO STORY BARN. THIS IS IN RISING SUN, INDIANA. THAT’S ALONG STATE ROUTE 262. AND THE FAMILY TELLING US IT SOUNDED LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN WAS COMING THROUGH THEIR YARD IN BURLINGTON, KENTUCKY. A FAMILY SPENT THE DAY TRYING TO CLEAR OUT A 60 YEAR OLD TREE THAT WAS COMPLETELY UPROOTED. THE TREE JUST BARELY MISSING A LOVED ONE’S HOME. SIX MORE INCHES TO THE RIGHT. THIS HOUSE WOULD HAVE BEEN NOT HERE. IT WOULD BE A DIFFERENT CONVERSATION. COLD, COLD WIND. THAT WIND WOULD BE MORE DAYS TO COME. I DON’T KNOW IF ANYBODY ELSE CAN SEE IT, BUT MY NOSE IS PRETTY RED AND RUNNY, SO IT’S BEEN COLD. SEE THE MESS OVER THERE? SO THAT’S GOING TO BE FUN TO CLEAN UP. OH YEAH. SO OBVIOUSLY ASSESSING THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN THE MAIN FOCUS. THEY WILL BE DOING THE CLEANUP EFFORTS UNDERWAY AND GETTING A LITTLE BIT WARMER AS THEY ARE OUT THERE GETTING THAT WORK DONE. YES IT DOES. IT FEELS LIKE MARCH. IT FEELS LIKE WHERE WE’RE SUPPOSED TO BE AT. YEAH, A LITTLE MORE SEASONAL OUT THERE. WE STARTED OUT THIS MORNING ON THE COLD SIDE. YEAH. BUT STILL CLOSE TO OUR SEASONAL AIR. BY THIS AFTERNOON. NOT TOO BAD EITHER. THE GOOD NEWS IS WE HAVE SUNSHINE IS BACK IN THE FORECAST, SO OUR CITY CAM SHOWING THAT SUNSHINE OUT THERE TEMPERATURES AS I MENTIONED STILL ON THE COOL SIDE. BUT FOR EARLY MARCH OR RATHER LATE MARCH I SHOULD SAY EARLY SPRING AS WE’RE JUST GETTING INTO THE SPRING SEASON. NOT TOO BAD FOR US. SO SOUTHWEST WINDS OF ABOUT 11 MILES AN HOUR, ADDING JUST A TOUCH OF WIND. CHILL OUT THERE AS WELL. BUT MUCH OF OUR AREA NOW GETTING INTO THOSE 40S FROM 42 BATAVIA TO WILMINGTON, 44 UP THERE IN MASON TO 42 BROOKVILLE LAKE, AS WELL AS BATESVILLE, OLDENBURG, 43 DOWN THERE IN PARTS OF FALMOUTH. SO AS WE WORK OUR WAY THROUGH THE DAY, THAT SUNSHINE, THOSE WINDS GOING TO BE CALM, CALMING DOWN AND TEMPERATURES MAKING THEIR WAY INTO THE MID 50S. VERY SEASONAL FOR THIS AFTERNOON. AND THEN IF YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO EITHER WATCH THE MARCH MADNESS GAMES, GO OUT FOR FISH FRY FRIDAY. NOT TOO BAD THIS EVENING EITHER. LOWER 50S EVENTUALLY TURNING INTO THE UPPER 40S BY LATE TONIGHT. THE GOOD NEWS IS WE’RE GOING TO KEEP THESE LOW TO MID 50S FOR MOST AFTERNOONS GOING HERE THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK INTO THE WEEKEND. SOME BREEZY WINDS, BUT HAD MY FULL FORECAST. WE’LL BE TALKING ABOUT SOME RAIN CHANCES RETURNING BY SUNDAY. SO TIME THAT OUT COMING UP IN A FEW MINUTES. LADIES. ALL RIGHT ADAM THANK YOU. RIGHT NOW WE’RE GETTING OUR FIRST LOOK AT THE BRAND NEW MENU OPTIONS AT GREAT AMERICAN BALLPARK. YES. SO JUST ABOUT EVERYONE FROM THE STATION WHO’S NOT ON SHIFT RIGHT NOW IS DOWN THERE. WLWT NEWS FIVE’S NICOLE APONTE RANDI RICO. I THINK A HANDFUL OF OUR PRODUCERS, THEY’RE ALL DOWN AT THE BALLPARK TRYING OUT NEW THINGS. WE’RE JEALOUS GUYS. TELL US WHAT’S UP. WE ALL WANTED KELLY. SOMEONE WHO’S GOING TO GET STUFF ALL OVER HER FACE. NICOLE APONTE ME. RANDI. AND YOU’VE ALREADY WITNESSED THAT ALREADY. FIRST OPENING DAY, FIRST TIME TRYING ALL THIS FOOD. OH, HE’S JUST THE BEST.
