BOZEMAN, Mont. – The local food bank in Bozeman is making a big push to have enough turkeys for families across the county.

The Gallatin Valley Food Bank is running short on turkeys for their annual Thanksgiving Food Box distribution which starts on Sunday,

“We’re anticipating having boxes for 1,200 people so that kind of ties in with right now,” said Programs Manager for the Gallatin Valley Food Bank, Laura Stonecipher.  “We’re definitely low on turkeys – we have about 600 in our freezers and another couple hundred promised so we really are seeing a big need there.”

Local grocery stores and businesses are participating in this year’s Turkey Drive

“You can purchase a Turkey at most of the grocery stores and just tell them it’s for the food bank,” said Stonecipher. “We’re making daily runs and we will pick up your turkey so you don’t have to come here. If you want to come here, I know some people want to shop with their kids and have their kid come in you can just bring it right here to the food bank at 602 Bond Street.”

Other food banks across Gallatin County will also be collecting Turkeys

“We will be distributing in Big Sky, through our Big Sky Satellite food bank, also out in Headwaters at that food bank, we help provide Turkeys for Hope and the Holidays and some other organizations come December,” Stonecipher said.

Not only can you still donate Turkeys through noon on Saturday but you can also sign up for next Thursday’s Huffing for Stuffing  Fun Run to either run or volunteer and burn a few calories before your Thanksgiving dinner.

“It does take a lot of legwork to get it up and running so we’re still looking for volunteers to help out with setup, logistics of organizing that many people, and break down and also for folks just interested in running,” Childhood Nutrition Coordinator Lyra Leigh-Nedbor said. “It’s a great way to get out and see other friends and see community folks and say ‘hi.’”

Your entry fee for the race goes directly to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank to help make the holidays a little better for somebody,

You can sign up online the Huffing for Stuffing or at packet pickup on Nov 21st at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds. You can also sign up at the Museum of the Rockies in the hours before the race Thanksgiving morning.
