Shopping boom: Costco sets sights on Perth's south for second store

By Hamish Hastie

Casuarina, the southern Perth suburb famed as the home of WA’s maximum security prison, will be able to add another feather to its cap if US retail giant Costco gets planning approval for its newest store.

The company announced on Tuesday it had received structure plan approval for a new $50 million store on the corner of Thomas Road and the Kwinana Freeway in the City of Kwinana.

The first Costco is currently under construction at Perth Airport and is expected to open May 2020.

Managing director Patrick Noone said Casuarina was the ideal location for the company’s next foray into the WA market.

“We have been looking for a suitable site in the south of Perth for the past six years and this site really ticks all the boxes with regards to access to surrounding road network and residential growth areas,” he said.

“Once we receive our planning approvals, we will be investing in a $50 million retail warehouse.

“This is exciting for many reasons, particularly as Kwinana is such a dynamic and fast growing region.

“We will seek to actively engage with locally based suppliers, recruit over 250 staff from the local area and bring great value in relation to a wide range of products and services.”

Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said the City expected development applications to be lodged soon.

The council will make a recommendation but the ultimate decision will be for a Joint Development Assessment Panel.

Ms Adams said the city had been working closely with Costco for some time.

“While the planning approval will require careful consideration, we are delighted by the potential opportunities,” she said.

“The Costco store has the ability to help to address employment issues in the region.

“Kwinana is the second-fastest growing local government in Perth and investment decisions such as these show great confidence of the future of the region.”

Costco currently operates 11 stores in Australia and 776 worldwide.

WA developers Aigle Royal Group are leading the project.
