Health and Wellness is celebrated in March with National Nutrition Month and National Dietitian Nutrition Day

By: Tom Cosgrove, Senior Manager, Program and Development, FMI Foundation/Health & Wellness

20171205-FMI-Store Shoot-0655_edNot only is March National Nutrition Month, but today is National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, and FMI would once again like to celebrate registered dietitians in the food retail industry and highlight our resident Dietitians at FMI.

I started off the conversation with Susan Borra, RD and FMI’s Chief Health and Wellness Officer, to discuss the important role of registered dietitians nutritionists in food retail.  Borra said:

“As you know, the mission of the food retail industry is feeding families and enriching lives and this is matches the goal of Registered Dietitians Nutritionists to help consumers make personalized positive food and health lifestyle changes. It has been extremely gratifying to see tremendous growth of the role of the Registered Dietitian in food retail  during my career.”

According to U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends 2017, supermarkets are a trusted ally in health and wellness.  Sue explained that is in large part to the incredible work Registered Dietitians are doing for the shoppers they serve.

I also spoke with Dr. Hilary Thesmar, PhD, RD, CFS, FMI’s Chief Food and Product Safety Officer about National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day, and she had similar thoughts on how the focus on health and wellness has grown in the food retail industry. In fact, according to FMI’s Retailer Contributions to Health and Wellness report, 54 percent of stores have food safety education in at least 50 percent of their stores.  She commended the food retailers for their efforts to bring more Registered Dietitians to their companies at both the corporate and store levels throughout the industry.

“The health and wellness focused consumer is here to stay and I look forward to watching the trend of more companies adding Dietitians to their staff,” Thesmar stated.

The Academy of Nutrition Dietetics has celebrated March as National Nutrition Month® for almost 30 years.  This year’s theme “Go Further with Food” encourages shoppers to prepare meals in advance to enjoy throughout the week along with urging customers to find ways to cut back on food waste.

Borra added, “This theme goes perfectly with FMI Foundation’s National Family Meals Month movement.” National Family Meals Month encourages families to enjoy more meals at home as a family. This will allow you and your family to ‘go further with food."
