Speaker of National Assembly is already in Luanda

Luanda, ANGOLA, August 19 - The Speaker of the National Assembly, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, returned Saturday to the country after having participated in the 38th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), in Windhoek, Namibia.,

On his arrival in Luanda, the parliamentary leader, who participated in the summit as chair of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, was received at the International Airport 04 de Fevereiro by the first Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Joana Lina, MPs and seniors parliamentary officials.

Under the motto "Promoting infrastructure development and the potential of youth for sustainable development," the Summit set up a joint technical commission to follow up on the process of transforming the SADC Parliamentary Forum into the Regional Parliament by January 2019.

Speaking to the press in the Namibian capital, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos expressed optimism about the transformation of this institution into the Regional Parliament, adding that most leaders in the region agree and support the initiative.

This subject dominated the agenda of the Heads of State and Government and, according to the president of the regional Forum who presented arguments at the summit on transformation, "the results were positive", although the proposal has not yet been approved.

The SADC Parliamentary Forum was created in 1997 on the occasion of the 17th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community held in Malawi as an autonomous institution and consists of 14 parliaments.

The Forum is made up by Angola, Comoros, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Seychelles, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zambia.
